Wedding bands

The ring you'll
actually wear daily

Bands get worn every day for decades. Comfort, metal and width matter more here than they do on anything else in the case.

Choosing

Four decisions, in the order they matter

Comfort fit or standard

Comfort fit is domed on the inside so it slides over the knuckle more easily. It also runs slightly tighter, so it's usually sized a half size down. Worth trying both.

Width

Two millimeters looks delicate, six looks substantial, and the same width reads differently on different hands. This is the one to decide by trying, not by picture.

Metal

14K holds up better to daily wear than 18K. Platinum is heavier and scratches into a soft patina rather than wearing away. White gold needs replating every few years.

Finish

Polished, brushed, matte, hammered or milgrain edging. A brushed finish hides everyday scratches better than a mirror polish does.

Matching to an engagement ring

Getting the two rings to sit flush

If an engagement ring has a low-set center stone or an unusual profile, a straight band will leave a visible gap. A contoured band is shaped to follow the ring's outline so the pair sits flat against each other.

  • Contoured and notched bands cut to fit your specific ring
  • Soldering the two rings together, if you'd rather they never separate
  • Matching the metal and finish so they don't age differently
  • Bringing the engagement ring in is the fastest way to get this right

Also worth knowing

Engraving and anniversaries

Inside engraving is done here — a date, initials, a few words in your own handwriting. It takes very little time and costs very little, and it's the detail people mention years later.

Anniversary bands, eternity bands and upgrades to an existing ring are all things we do regularly. If a band has worn thin after twenty years, it can often be rebuilt rather than replaced.
